Honoring the Feminine: A Reflection on Motherhood, Masculinity, and Fulfillment

Updated: May 16

As we reflect on the influence of mothers and feminine energy in our lives, I’ve been thinking about the quiet yet powerful presence that shapes us—not only in the women who raised us but in the sacred feminine energy we all carry within.

A group of men at The Fulfilled Man retreat sitting in a circle on yoga mats, blankets, and cushions, engaging in meaningful conversation and self-discovery, embodying balance and connection.

The Voice That Said “Do It”

From the bleachers at my childhood games—baseball, basketball—you’d hear her voice rise above the crowd:

“Do it!”

It wasn’t forceful. It wasn’t loud for the sake of being loud. It was precise. Present. Penetrating in that way only a mother’s love can be.

That gentle strength wasn’t about pressure. It was belief.

It was her way of reminding me to trust myself.

To give myself permission.

To follow my divine calling.

From the disciplined structure of the football field to the spontaneous flow of van life.

From sitting cross-legged on a meditation cushion to speaking on stage last week at the National Ayurvedic conference, sharing about integrating identity and fulfillment.

These two words—“Do it”—have and continue to echo through my journey.

The Feminine Within Us All

When we talk about the feminine, we’re not just talking about women. We’re talking about the qualities within each of us that feel deeply, that create, that nourish, that receive.

In our fast-paced, results-driven culture, it’s easy—especially as men—to disconnect from that part of ourselves. We’re taught to push through, to fix, to hustle.

But fulfillment isn’t born from doing for doing's sake.

Fulfillment comes from doing from a place of being—presence.

The feminine is the part of us that listens without needing to solve. That creates space for life to unfold. That honors intuition alongside intellect.

When we reject the feminine, we reject a part of our own humanity.

But when we revere and integrate it, we become more whole.

A Moment of Truth

I remember a season in my life when I felt completely disconnected from that side of myself. I was achieving, grinding, doing all the “right” things—but I was exhausted. Out of alignment. Burned out.

It wasn’t until I slowed down, softened, and started listening that I found my way back to center.

Honoring the feminine didn’t make me less of a man. It made me a fuller one.

Sacred Brotherhood: Integrated Masculinity

This is one of the reasons I created Sacred Brotherhood—a space for men to gather in truth, courage, and compassion.

Each month, we explore a theme that brings us closer to our authentic selves. And one of the meaningful themes we put attention towards around Mother's Day is Honoring the Feminine.

Not just in our mothers, sisters, and daughters—but in ourselves.

It’s a conversation that invites depth, softness, creativity, and healing—and opens the door to a more integrated masculinity.

In our circles, I’ve witnessed men reclaim tears they were taught to hide. Speak truth they’ve never voiced. Listen without rushing to fix or respond. Open to love not as a transaction, but as a way of being.

Reflection Questions

  • What is a lasting impact your mother (or a mother figure) has had on your life?

  • Who taught you what it meant to be strong? And how might that definition expand?

  • What parts of you are asking to be recognized and revered?
