You Don’t Fear the Unknown. You Fear the Stories You’ve Placed Inside It.

Updated: Jun 24

Man facing away from camera, staring out into a vast open unknown.
“I’m uncomfortable with the unfamiliar.”

That’s what a client said to me recently.

And it hit.

So I asked:

“Tell me more. What’s unfamiliar right now?”

They paused and shared something many of us wouldn’t admit:

“For the first time in years, my life is stable. Financially. Relationally. Even emotionally. Nothing is wrong… but something feels off.”

We explored it together.

Not to fix it—but to understand it.

And what we uncovered was this:

Their mind was inserting a subconscious trauma story into the unknown.

The story?

“If I relax… I’ll relapse.”

Even though they were safe in the present moment, their nervous system was scanning for danger—because having a problem felt more familiar than peace.

They were uncomfortable—not because anything was wrong… …but because nothing was wrong.

The Unknown Isn’t the Problem. Our Pain-Filled Projections Are.

When we’ve lived in chaos, pain, or pressure for a long time, calm can feel threatening.

Not because it is—

but because it disrupts the identity we’ve built around always being in survival,

always being on edge,

always solving a problem.

So we fill the void of peace with stories like:

  • “This won’t last.”

  • “I must be missing something.”

  • “If I stop, I’ll slip.”

  • “I don’t know what to do with this ease.”

These stories come from past pain. From unresolved memories. From inherited survival mechanisms.

But here’s the breakthrough:

You are safe now. You are not broken. You are in unfamiliar territory— and that doesn’t mean you’re in danger.

Peace Isn’t a Problem to Solve. It’s a New Rhythm to Learn.

After seeing this clearly, my client exhaled. Their shoulders dropped. Their nervous system softened.

They said:

“Wow… that’s it. But that's not true—I'm a different person now." That’s worth $25,000.

And they weren’t exaggerating. Because that kind of clarity—that kind of inner reorganization—can change everything.

Not just how you feel in your body. But how you show up in your relationships, your work, and your decisions.

So If You’ve Been Feeling “Fear” in the Calm...

If you're waiting for the next shoe to drop, if peace feels suspicious, if you’re uncomfortable in the stillness—this is your invitation to pause.

To breathe. To not create drama. To let peace be your new normal.

You don’t fear the unknown. You fear the stories you’ve placed inside it. And those stories?

You’re writing them anyway.

Why not write with conscious emotional traction—rather than letting fear drive the narrative?
