Gut Healthy Fruit Salad Recipes

Updated: Jul 19, 2023

Full disclosure and trigger warning...

I'm going to RUIN typical American fruit salads with this information...

Ayurveda informs us to NOT eat melons with any other fruits!

I know... or any other foods for that matter.

Here's the reason...

Melons are so high in water content that they digest much faster than other foods.

But if they digest faster, isn't that fine?

I see where you're coming from, but it isn't that simple.

As the digestive tract won't allow the melons to continue until all of the other foods are digested. Which can cause them to ferment and cause gas, bloating, as well as other indigestion issues.

Okay, here's the Fruit Salad Recipes I recommend:

In general it is best for digestion to enjoy fruit salads comprised of fruits that have similar qualities and tastes in season and with time to properly digest before eating other foods.

  • Citrus Salad: 1 orange, 1/2 grapefruit, 2 dried pineapple rings, 2 tbsp coconut water, 1 squeeze of fresh lime juice

  • Berry Salad: 1/2 cup blueberries, 1/2 cup raspberries, 1/2 cup chopped strawberries, 1 tbsp dried cranberries, 2 tbsp pomegranate juice

  • Sweet Salad: 1/2 chopped cored apple, 1 chopped cored pear, 1/2 cup halved red grapes, 2 pitted and diced dates, 2 tbsp apple juice

  • Melons and Bananas are "celibate" and enjoy being alone

(These recipe ideas are inspired by Kate O'Donnell's book, "The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook")

NOTE: Summer is a nice season to enjoy refreshing fresh fruit salad as a meal, or before bed remedy for sluggish bowels.
